Leppa.La, my domain hack resume website.

Hi, I’m Andrew. I’ve been tooling around with computers for over a decade and figured it was time to spruce up my old resume site from a static page, to something more dynamic and advanced. Unfortunately for me, this means increased maintenance – but such is the cost of progress. This will force my hand into increased monitoring and improve my skillset in that regard, something I’m happy for the opportunity for.

My previous website was a static HTML page, borrowed from a template found on Github with my name slapped on the top. It did the job well enough, but there were almost zero human visitors. My goal with this new website is to add easier blogging ability, get my name out there, and practice live server administration with higher stakes. Previously, my only live administration experience was on my Minecraft Server, and while that project was my largest and most in-depth experience of my life so far, the curtains have closed on that era of my life. This website was also hosted on Namecheap’s Managed WordPress service, meaning my input was largely unnecessary.

JournalCTL is happy

This new website is selfhosted on a cloud server I rent, putting me in charge of the server’s OS security, user access, SSL/TLS, the webserver and the MariaDB database that powers it all. This server runs on Ubuntu 22.04, chosen due to my familiarity with Ubuntu server and the free licensing costs vs Windows server. As it’s just a simple webserver, there’s no reason to go with Windows server for this application – in my experience, Windows Server is best used in an environment where centralized authentication such as Active Directory is integrated into the server infrastructure, or when the software only runs on Windows environments. Integrating Group Policy to manage fleets of servers is fantastic for Windows Server, but simple one-off webservers have more benefits running on Linux where there are no licensing costs to worry about.

I’m incredibly excited to work with WordPress again, and hope you follow my journey with me.
